Howdy folks, Kevin Kyser here from K and K Septic. For over two decades, I have been helping homeowners in Alabama with their septic systems. In that time, I have heard just about every myth and misconception under the sun.

Myth 1: Septic Tanks Take Care Of Themselves

Busted. Just like your car needs regular oil changes, your septic tank needs routine maintenance. Over time, solid waste builds up in the tank. If it is not pumped out periodically, it can clog the system and lead to expensive repairs.

Myth 2: Additives Let You Flush Anything

Busted. Additives are not a substitute for responsible use. Harsh chemicals, coffee grounds, grease, and hygiene products can harm the bacteria your septic system relies on.

Myth 3: A Full Septic Tank Always Needs Pumping

Busted. A healthy septic tank will usually be full of liquid. The concern is the sludge layer, not simply the liquid level.

Myth 4: Trees Are Good For Your Septic System

Busted. Tree roots can clog drain lines and damage the system. Plant trees well away from your septic tank and drainfield.

Myth 5: Slow Drains Need Drain Cleaner

Busted. Drain cleaners may offer a temporary fix, but they can also harm the good bacteria in your septic tank. Slow drains should be diagnosed by a professional.

Myth 6: You Can Park Or Build Over Your Septic Tank

Busted. Heavy vehicles and structures can damage the tank and drainfield. Keep the system accessible for inspections and pumping.

Myth 7: Clogged Systems Cannot Be Repaired

Many clogged systems can be restored if the real problem is diagnosed correctly. Replacement is not always necessary.

Myth 8: You Can Diagnose Septic Problems Yourself

Busted. Preventive habits matter, but diagnosing and repairing septic problems is best left to trained professionals who can identify the cause and recommend the right solution.
